Just south of Chapel Hill, Tenn., Henry Horton State Park is a natural haven rich with history and biodiversity. Established in the 1960s on the estate of former governor Henry Horton, this park is a testament to Tennessee's dedication to preserving natural beauty and history. The park is situated along the banks of the Duck River, one of the most ecologically diverse rivers in the world.

Things to Do

Recreational activities at the park cater to all interests and skill levels. The Buford Ellington championship golf course challenges golfers with its tree-lined fairways and strategic bunkers. Anglers will find the Duck River abundant with fish species, while those interested in shooting sports can enjoy the trap and skeet range.

The park also offers miles of trails for hiking and biking, playgrounds for children, and an 18-hole disc golf course, ensuring fun for the entire family. Hikers on the Wilhoite Mill Trail can get a glimpse into the past with the remnants of a century old mill and bridge that were once operated by the family of Horton's spouse.

Other activities and amenities to take advantage of include guided river floats, swimming in the Olympic-sized pool, the trap and skeet range and birdwatching. Carolina chickadees, tufted titmouses, pileated and red-bellied woodpeckers and migrating warblers are some of the over 70 species of birds that call Henry Horton State Park home at various times throughout the year.
